Teach and Travel in India

Teaching in India - How different it is
India is a country where teachers have always been
held in high esteem all through out its 5000 year old
history. A land that has given the world the metric
system, ancient astronomy, Ayurveda, cotton and many
such firsts. Added to this is the fact that India
embodies diversity like no other country. Therefore
teaching in India is a challenge by itself where every
region has a different language, weather condition,
culture and mores. Your adaptability will be tested to
the limit but the experience will enrich your heart
and soul.

India
as a Teaching Destination
The system of western education in India is about 500
years old but India is the third oldest civilization
in the world. The importance of education is in the
psyche of every Indian. Therefore the teacher in
Indian society is placed on the highest rung of the
social ladder. It is ingrained in the students to
respect their teachers sometimes more than the
parents. It is this culture of respecting the elders
and the teacher that makes teaching in India so
rewarding but at the same time it comes with a great
deal of responsibility. Teaching is considered to be a
vocation rather than a profession. In the past decade
Indian teachers and the Indian education system has
been attracting a great deal of international
attention. Most western universities and many schools
appoint Indian teachers for their knowledge and
dedication. Therefore expectations are high from
teachers in India and it is both exciting and
challenging to teach in India.
India
as a Traveling destination
India has attracted people from all over the world
from time immemorial. At the moment anything remotely
with an Indian flavour, be it clothes, movies, music
or food attracts world attention. It is an emerging
global economy making strides in science and
technology yet it holds on to its 5000 year old
cultural roots that permeates every Indian soul.
Therefore to see this amalgamation of the modern with
the traditional, one has to come to India. A country
that has the mighty Himalayas, biodiverse forests, the
Thar desert, deep oceans, ancient hunter gatherers,
ancient temples and sculptures, great Mughal
architecture, home to three world religions, classical
and folk music along with modern and vibrant cities.
One needs to revisit India several times in order to
just see a fraction of what it can offer.
Opportunities for ESL teachers in India (for native
English / westerners)
English is an official language in India. Due to the
past colonial history English has been in India for
the past 500 years but has been restricted to the
educated or elite class. It has not percolated to the
lower levels. Therefore the need for English teachers
has always been felt. At the same time due to the
heavy regional language influence of non native
speakers of English the need to be exposed to native
speakers is also a necessity. India has been on the
world BPO map for a while now, here too there is a
requirement for native trainers for voice and accent
neutralization and cultural training. The mushrooming
of language schools is an indicator for the demand for
learning the language and these schools would like to
employ native speakers of the language to enhance the
communicative skills of the students and have an edge
over competitors in the market. Large corporate houses
with international business links also appoint native
trainers to better the English proficiency levels of
their employees.
